Systems was the fortunate recipient of a grant for $450,000.00 that allowed us to build a new accessible home in Iowa City. The grant was from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars that was designated to assist states with disability services. Through another ARPA grant, we can add SMART features that will allow maximum independence for the people that live there.
“Looking at waiting lists across the state and our agency, it is painfully clear that there is a need for more accessible housing,” stated Mona Kenyon, CEO. “We took a risk with beginning this project and hoping the state or federal government would come through on their commitment for funding to address this problem. They did and we couldn’t be prouder of how this project is turning out.”
The home will be for four men where they will each enjoy their own bedrooms and share two bathrooms. The home is built on a slab with a large garage that can be used for storage built in a new community on the east side of the city. The location allows for easy access to the interstate and bus routes. The last time that Systems was able to build an accessible home was in 1994.
Systems will have an open house to tour the new home on April 2 from 5-7pm. Be sure to save the date and there will be more to come on that.
