Leadership and Tie-Dye: A Day with the Mandela Washington Fellows

Mandelas arriving at the Tie Dye PartyOn July 12th and 23rd, we were thrilled to welcome the Mandela Washington Fellowship to Systems Unlimited. The Mandela Washington Fellowship, also called the Fellows, consists of a group of young African leaders who are provided invaluable opportunities to connect with other leaders in their community as well as learn from experts in their field.

This year, approximately 24 Fellows from Sub-Saharan African countries joined the program at the University of Iowa. During their time in the program, they will engage in academic coursework, receive leadership training from experts, and enjoy networking opportunities. We at Systems are honored to be recognized as experts in our field and asked to share our knowledge about Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) with the Fellows.

Mandela Fellows and SUI playing gamesEach day they visited began with a group of Fellows gathering at our main office in Iowa City for a presentation about Systems Unlimited and a discussion on HCBS services. Following the presentation, the Fellows attended a tie-dye party with our staff and the people we serve. During the party, the Fellows tie-dyed shirts and played yard games, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and joy.

Hosting the Fellows was a truly inspiring and enjoyable time and we look forward to welcoming them again next year.
