Juneteenth is upon us! In 2021, Juneteenth received extra spotlight when President Joe Biden signed the bill declaring it a federal U.S. holiday – officially referred to as Juneteenth National Independence Day.
The reason behind this date is to remind us that on June 19th, 1865, African Americans were officially freed from slavery. However, many were not set free that day – nor were these people freed from discrimination or given equal rights – but it was the beginning of a large movement.
Earlier celebrations of Juneteenth consisted of individuals dressing their best, joining together for food, and rejoicing in a religious manner of their choosing. It has also been documented that fishing, playing baseball, and even rodeos were forms of celebration.
In the modern age, this holiday continues to hold a significant meaning and is celebrated in various ways! A few of the ways people celebrate are by being together, eating homemade food, drinking red drinks (in honor of blood shed), and listening to music, which are all in line with the traditions of the past. In addition, there are also celebrations that include lectures and speeches, many of which proclaim the journey and history that pertain to all that had to be endured by the people who were enslaved.
Overall, much of this celebration highlights African American and/or Black heritage and art that lives on, despite history’s attempt at erasing this culture. We celebrate the freedom that was gained while also acknowledging the hardship that was – and still is – being overcome.
Of course, this singular article does not cover all of the information and history regarding Juneteenth; as such, everyone is encouraged to take steps to research and educate themselves on this holiday. Included here are some Juneteenth events happening in Eastern Iowa that will be taking place. We encourage you to attend at least one and enjoy the celebration.
We shall leave you with a quote. Angela Davis says, “Juneteenth, the day we celebrate the end of slavery, the day we memorialize those who offered us hope for the future, and the day when we renew our commitment to the struggle for freedom.”
