Our medical support staff are advocates for the people we serve, and they take the time to get to know each person’s specific medical needs. They provide training and support to help our staff understand complex medical needs, as well as teach the people we serve about their diagnosis and how to care for themselves.
They also write and evaluate medical care plans to ensure staff understand instructions related to medical needs.

Margee Jansen has received services from Systems for 41 years and is well-known in the Systems community. She’s always up for a good laugh and has an infectious smile.
After transitioning from a G-tube to a button tube, or MIC-KEY, Margee dealt with severe illness due to the incorrect placement of her MIC-KEY tube. Unfortunately, Margee didn’t have family or a guardian in state to advocate for her care, and Margee’s medical team made the decision to place her on hospice and discharge her home for oral feeding.
Margee’s Coordinator Betty Ngugi knew there was more that could be done to save Margee’s life. Systems advocated for Margee, refusing to take her home and insisting that the hospital begin feeding Margee. She was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital for care, where she received a lifesaving surgery and correctly placed MIC-KEY tube.
