Systems Unlimited Needs Assistance with New Children’s Home

“The best part is that Aidan gets to experience the full spectrum of living: trying new things, having friends, being part of a community, even giving back.” Leah and Paul’s journey of placing their son Aidan with Systems Unlimited, Inc. began ten years ago when he was eleven years old. At that time, Aidan (who has a diagnosis of autism and intellectual disability) was displaying behaviors that made it increasingly difficult to keep him safe at home.

When it was time to place Aidan, Leah and Paul chose Systems Unlimited. While no parent wants to place their child outside of their home at eleven, they felt this was the best choice for them. “It’s a process to accept what is initially the ‘new normal’ and now what is just a different way to live as a family,” stated Leah. Both Leah and Paul feel that Aidan has shown growth while living at a Systems home. “The work that Systems has done in creating an environment that benefits him has helped Aidan find a peace in himself. He has many more good days than bad. He is mostly just a happy guy! Aidan has had gains that I never thought we’d see. He barely elopes, he eats vegetables and he communicates. I couldn’t be more pleased with where he is now.”

Systems Unlimited, Inc. has served children living with a developmental disability in the Iowa City area since it began in 1971. The goal of the program is to keep kids living in a home like environment close to their natural support system such as schools and family. No more than four children live in a house where they have their own bedrooms. The house should reflect the kids that live there and not have an institutional feel. Families are encouraged to maintain their relationships with their children and are free to visit when they want.

What can you do to help?

Systems Unlimited’ s residential children services are funded by Medicaid through the Residential Based Supported Community Living waiver program. Systems has plans to serve two more children this spring in the Iowa City area. While Medicaid pays for Systems services, the kids will need household items from silverware to bath rugs. We are asking the public for donations to help the kids feel comfortable in their new home and start this journey. If you would like to donate items, please follow this link: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1P99DHC07Z2XL?&sort=default

We are also seeking experienced staff to work at this home. If you have experience in the disability field and would be interested in making a difference in a child’s life, please contact Amanda Hartson at amanda.hartson@sui.org. You can also reach our offices by calling 319-338-9212.

While no longer a child, Aidan continues to receive adult services at Systems Unlimited through the Medicaid waiver program. Aidan resides in Iowa City where he shares a home with two other young men also served by Systems Unlimited.
